Welcome to BC Biodiversity, an online database with information and photographs covering the entire range of British Columbia's amazing biological diversity (biodiversity) from flowers and ferns, to shrubs, trees, parasitic plants, mushrooms and mosses to amphibians, bugs, slugs and more! Enjoy surfing our site! Want to know what biodiversity is exactly, then click here.

Lyrae has a BSc. Honors, in Environmental Sciences and is now studying Lichenology, she is also actively involved in the removal of noxious species in BC through education and remediation. If you live on / near the Sunshine Coast and would like to help out on a volunteer noxious species removal day (Scotch Broom and Knotweed are my first targets) then please contact me.
Unidentified Organisms: take a look at pictures of a wide variety of organisms we have not yet identified positively, if you know what they are let us know!
Ecosystems:Some basic ecosystem concepts and examples to help you understand what an ecosystem is and why it is important to examine a species in relation to the ecosystem it lives in.
BC Ecosystem Classification: a description of the of Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification System, a classification system used to describe large areas of land based on plant assemblages as well as geographical and climatic factors; plus a look at the different ecosystems in Coastal BC based on this classification.
Scenic BC Pictures: British Columbia truly is a beautiful place, one of the most beautiful places on earth. And I am not just saying that because it is my home; I feel very fortunate to live in a coastal temperate rainforest with all of its beauty. So here I will share some of it with you. I have divided this page into:
Forests & Trees: Here you will find pictures of a variety of different forests and trees at different life stages.
Weather, Clouds & Mists: Pictures of mountain mists and mists over lakes, plus lovely clouds and curious weather.
BELOW: Caught In The Act! Here I was captured on film unaware when I paused to do what I love to do best, admire nature. I was in Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park in Egmont, BC in the summer of 2002 when I paused to view a beautiful patch of Indian Pipe (a parasitic plant that lacks chlorophyll, its roots are attached to the roots of coniferous trees via fungal roots; thus it obtains nutrients from the roots of coniferous trees rather than making its own from the sun as most plants do, to see the picture I took that day go to Saprophytes, Carnivorous and Parasitic Plants) . I had to crouch down and hold my hand up to shade the narrow beams of sunlight that were penetrating the thick forest canopy above when I took my picture, sometimes I even have to lie down on the mossy, leafy, at times rain-soaked ground to get that perfect shot of a moss, mushroom, lichen or small plant. Other times you may find me hanging precariously over the edge of a waterfall spray-soaked rock cliff (now with safety gear attached) to take a picture of a lichen or moss growing on the rocks, but whatever it takes that is what you will find me doing. As always I am especially careful not to disturb the species I am photographing, nor do I disturb those around it, though occasionally I have to move leaf litter and other debris out of the field of view to get my shot but then I always replace it afterwards, I always leave an area just as I found it when I leave, minus perhaps some human garbage (pop cans, chip bags, etc) that I may find along the way.
